CIE defines ∆Eab (∆E76 or ∆E*) in 1976. It calculates the difference of two

colors only and does not consider the human perception on color difference. It is good for comparing the performance of spectrophotometer and change of color during fading test.

In order to improve the limitations and imperfection of ∆Eab,CIE published ∆E94 in 1995 and ∆E2000 in 2001 respectively.

Some print buyers prefer ∆ECMC published by The Colour Measurement Committee of the Society of Dyers and Colourists.

According to scientific research, ∆E2000 provide the best available

alignment with human perception on color difference which is now widely adopted by print buyers.
